This site, along with another in Truxton, Cortland County, was chosen by the Food Bank of Central New York after identifying regions where food access was particularly limited. Brian McManus, Chief Operating Officer, explained that these areas were selected based on their high levels of food insecurity and the difficulty residents faced in reaching traditional food pantries.
The pilot program, launched in the fall, provides monthly deliveries of fresh produce, canned goods, and frozen items directly to these lockers. Families receive notifications via text and email when their boxes are ready for pickup, complete with an access code. This streamlined process ensures that those in need can easily obtain food without barriers, addressing a critical gap in service for remote communities.
McManus emphasized the importance of overcoming obstacles that prevent individuals from accessing necessary resources. “We’re constantly looking for ways to remove any hurdles that stand between people and the food they need,” he said. With time and experience, the Food Bank is now exploring opportunities to expand this model to other areas, further enhancing food security across the region.
Looking ahead, the Food Bank of Central New York, in collaboration with CNY Central, CXtec, and Cumulus Media, will host a telethon on January 30th to raise funds for hunger relief. Every dollar donated will provide three meals to local families, highlighting the ongoing effort to support communities facing food insecurity.
