2025-03-24

In a thrilling conclusion to the high school basketball season, Fowler's Katie Spicer and her teammates clinched victory over Ewen-Trout Creek with a decisive 53-29 win in the Division 4 Final at Breslin Center. This championship marks Fowler's third title in the last five years, capping off an impressive run driven by motivation from previous semifinal defeats. Spicer led the scoring with 17 points, while Fowler maintained their dominance throughout the tournament, winning each game by significant margins.

The Fowler Eagles showcased their tenacity right from the opening tip-off. Despite forcing eight turnovers in the first quarter, they only managed a slim lead of 14-8, largely due to Emma Besonen’s efforts for Ewen-Trout Creek. The junior guard scored all her team's points in the first quarter, including two three-pointers that kept her team competitive. As the game progressed into the second quarter, Fowler extended their lead through strategic plays and sharp shooting, exemplified by Spicer’s precise pass to Neelah O’Rourke for a crucial lay-in.

By halftime, Fowler had built a more comfortable lead of 23-16, thanks to contributions from multiple players. In the third quarter, Fowler continued to dominate, outscoring Ewen-Trout Creek 19-3. Paige Thelen’s offensive rebound and put-back during the closing seconds of the period further solidified their commanding position. Coach Nathan Goerge praised his team's defensive improvements and energy in the second half, attributing these factors to their success.

Senior standout Elizabeth Hufnagel added 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals, reinforcing Fowler’s balanced attack. Brooke Weber also contributed significantly with 10 points. Meanwhile, the Panthers, despite being without seniors on their roster, made history as they played in their first championship game since 1985. Their coach, Jacky Besonen, expressed immense pride in her young team, highlighting their resilience and determination.

For Fowler, this victory not only avenges past losses but also reinforces their legacy as one of the top teams in Division 4. The Eagles' relentless pursuit of excellence, combined with their ability to execute under pressure, proved pivotal in securing another state title. Looking ahead, both teams can take pride in their achievements, with Fowler celebrating a remarkable season and Ewen-Trout Creek building momentum for future campaigns.
