The project initially faced several setbacks, with the arrival of the poles being one of the latest hurdles. Mayor Patty Lewis mentioned that despite the delays, the poles managed to reach ahead of schedule. Specialty Group Inc. (SGI), based in Lost Creek, has now started working on the hill at the entry from University Town Centre Drive to Walmart or WVU Medicine UTC. They are preparing the area for the pole bases to ensure proper curing before setting the poles.
Among the various delays, obtaining approval and clearing the location and spacing of the lights with the state Division of Highways was a significant task. Confirming the location of underground utilities also added to the time taken. Additionally, the delivery of the poles was delayed, causing further setbacks.
Mayor Lewis expressed her hope that the poles would be in place in time for holiday shopping, but that did not materialize. However, she remains optimistic and stated, "At this point, we’re praying for good weather so the project can keep moving along." The increased traffic in the area has become a concern, and the installation of these stoplights is crucial to ensure the safety of commuters.
Both the University Town Centre area and the Sesame Drive area are high-traffic zones that have witnessed some of the most serious accidents in Granville. Temporary "right-turn only" signs have been implemented in the past to manage the traffic. Now, with the start of work at the Sesame Drive location, efforts are being made to address the traffic issues comprehensively.
SGI is set to move down to the Sesame Drive area and begin work there around the first of January. The value of these two traffic lights is approximately $1 million, highlighting the significance of this investment in improving traffic safety. As the project progresses, it is expected to bring much-needed relief to the commuters and enhance the overall safety of the Granville area.
