An extraordinary event took place recently, offering a unique opportunity for mothers raising children with special needs to unwind and connect. Hosted by Friendship Circle, the "Shabbat at the Spa" retreat provided these remarkable women with moments of relaxation, inspiration, and camaraderie. The gathering was held at Riverwalk Place, a serene spa and resort in Gladwin, Michigan, from March 7-9. This annual event marked its eleventh year but was the first post-pandemic edition, making it even more special. Through thoughtful activities, heartfelt discussions, and meaningful gifts, the retreat aimed to rejuvenate these dedicated mothers while fostering a sense of community.
Gathered together were thirteen mothers who shared their stories and experiences during this memorable retreat. The weekend commenced with personalized spa treatments that set the tone for relaxation and self-care. Following these indulgent sessions, attendees had the chance to meet one another. Among them were seasoned participants, affectionately known as OGs (original gangsters), alongside newcomers like myself, all eager to exchange insights and build lasting connections.
One of the most touching aspects of the retreat was the beautifully decorated Shabbat table adorned with flowers and candles. Each detail was meticulously planned, including customized pendants crafted by artists at Soul Studio. These necklaces featured a single word chosen by family members or loved ones to encapsulate each mother's essence—words such as "caring," "loyal," and even "extraordinary." Before lighting the candles, Mushka Matusof, a facilitator from Toledo, Ohio, delivered an inspiring message about "the meaning behind the flames."
Throughout the weekend, various workshops and sessions enriched the experience. Participants engaged in Tanya meditation led by Devorah Leah Shmotkin, listened to personal anecdotes filled with hope and humor, and attended breakout sessions focusing on technology, self-care, and understanding the needs of neurotypical siblings. The atmosphere oscillated between moments of profound inspiration, laughter, and emotional reflection. Attendees embraced vulnerability, sharing resources and offering unwavering support to one another, forming bonds they fondly referred to as "Soul Sisters."
As the retreat concluded with a lively silent disco, participants danced freely, drawing parallels between this activity and the lives of individuals with special needs—each person dancing to their own rhythm, often oblivious to the world around them. A humorous twist added to the festivities when an unexpected guest was discovered napping in someone's bed! Despite the weekend's brevity, it left a lasting impact, empowering these mothers to return home refreshed, inspired, and better equipped to nurture their exceptional families.
