A high-speed pursuit involving a stolen vehicle culminated in a collision with a tree, leaving one individual injured, according to an incident report from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD). The chase unfolded when a driver accelerated rapidly after a deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop. During the pursuit, the vehicle reached speeds exceeding 100 mph and eventually crashed into a tree on Alpine Road. Following the crash, the suspect fled on foot into a wooded area but was later apprehended by deputies with the assistance of K9 units.
The incident began when a deputy initiated a traffic stop, only for the driver to speed away. The vehicle entered oncoming traffic, posing a significant risk to public safety. As the chase progressed along Percival Road, witnesses reported that the car was traveling at alarming speeds before it ultimately collided with a tree on Alpine Road. After the crash, the suspect abandoned the vehicle, which was found engulfed in flames, and fled into nearby woods.
Law enforcement officers quickly mobilized to search the area. With the help of trained K9 units, deputies located the suspect on the opposite side of the wooded area. Upon capture, it was discovered that the individual had sustained severe injuries to their leg during the escape. Despite the severity of the injury, the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
