Illinois Wheat Producers Embrace New Growth Initiative
2025-04-25

A groundbreaking decision has set the stage for a new era in Illinois wheat farming. With an overwhelming majority of 207 to 69, producers have endorsed a measure establishing a wheat check-off program within the state. This initiative is scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026, and will feature a voluntary assessment of 1.5 cents per bushel. The program aims to bolster agricultural development by channeling funds into research, promotion, and education.

Comparatively, this proposed rate falls below Kansas's voluntary 2-cent-per-bushel charge but surpasses Ohio and Kentucky’s respective rates tied to percentages of market prices. Nonetheless, the voluntary nature of these assessments ensures flexibility and participation based on producer preference. Following the official announcement on April 17, after thorough review by the Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA), Jerry Costello II, IDOA Director, expressed enthusiasm about the potential impact. Highlighting Illinois' status as the eleventh-largest wheat producer nationwide, with a yield of 60.2 million bushels in 2024, he emphasized how this move could elevate Illinois to a global leader in wheat production.

In anticipation of further steps, the Illinois Wheat Checkoff Committee, in collaboration with the IDOA, will soon outline procedures for electing members to the Illinois Wheat Development Board in Fall 2025. As detailed on the Illinois Wheat Association’s website, this board will consist of six district representatives and three at-large members—all dedicated wheat producers committed to steering the industry forward. Through collective effort and strategic planning, Illinois wheat farmers are poised to harness innovation and enhance their competitive edge in the international market, reinforcing agriculture's pivotal role in the state's economy.
