A unique initiative aims to address the growing shortage of affordable homes in Blacksburg by repurposing old vehicles. Habitat for Humanity of the New River Valley (NRV) has launched an inventive campaign that leverages donated cars, boats, RVs, and trailers to support the construction of affordable housing. This approach not only provides a creative solution to the housing crisis but also promotes sustainable practices.
According to James Drader, Executive Director of Habitat NRV, the median home price in Blacksburg has surged to approximately $400,000, making it increasingly difficult for residents to find affordable options. In response, the organization is seeking donations of any vehicle type to contribute to the development of eleven affordable townhouses on Airport Road. The proceeds from selling vehicle parts will go directly toward this project. "We can accept almost anything with wheels," Drader explained. "From classic cars to outdated RVs, every donation helps us move closer to our goal."
The innovative "Cars for Homes" program exemplifies how community-driven efforts can create meaningful change. By transforming unused vehicles into resources for building affordable homes, Habitat NRV demonstrates the power of collaboration and resourcefulness. This initiative not only offers hope to families in need but also encourages environmental responsibility. Through such programs, communities can foster a culture of giving back and sustainability, ensuring a brighter future for all.
