International Coffee Organization Launches Comprehensive Sustainability Database
2025-06-24

In a significant stride towards fostering greater transparency and collective action within the global coffee industry, the International Coffee Organization (ICO) has unveiled a sophisticated new resource: the Coffee Sustainability Support Database (C2SD). This innovative platform consolidates information on over 400 sustainability initiatives, providing a comprehensive overview for stakeholders navigating the complex landscape of coffee sustainability. The C2SD, a revamped version of the former Coffee Sustainability Initiatives Map, aims to streamline efforts, identify synergies, and address funding gaps across the sector.

The C2SD was officially launched last week, marking a pivotal moment in the ICO's commitment to promoting sustainable and inclusive growth in the coffee world. This advanced database boasts an enhanced interface, complete with dedicated country and program views, making it more user-friendly and accessible. It integrates data from over 600 project-leading organizations and more than 170 contributing donors, offering detailed insights into various project types, objectives, geographical coverage, and current operational status. The system also presents filtered lists and graphical representations to aid in quick analysis and decision-making.

Vanúsia Nogueira, the Executive Director of the ICO, expressed immense pride in this new development, emphasizing its alignment with the organization's core mission. The creation of the C2SD was a collaborative endeavor, stemming from the collective efforts of members within the ICO's Coffee Public-Private Task Force, with notable support from the International Trade Centre (ITC). This collaborative foundation underscores the industry-wide recognition of the need for a centralized, accessible repository of sustainability efforts.

The platform is designed to be dynamic, allowing for voluntary project submissions through an intuitive online form. Furthermore, it supports ongoing updates to project information following initial validation, ensuring the data remains current and relevant. The ICO envisions the C2SD as a crucial tool for scaling individual sustainability efforts by enabling alignment with broader collective strategies. It also serves as a vital instrument for identifying potential areas of collaboration, preventing duplication of efforts, and pinpointing areas where financial support is most needed. Looking ahead, the organization plans to expand the database to include projects funded by investment banks and various development funds, further broadening its scope and utility.

Ultimately, the core objective of the Coffee Sustainability Support Database, as articulated by Nogueira, is to centralize disparate information and make it readily available to all key stakeholders in the coffee value chain. This relaunch represents a significant leap forward in achieving that mission, providing enhanced tools that empower informed decision-making, foster stronger collaboration, and facilitate more strategic allocation of resources for a more sustainable coffee future.
