ITV Unveils Espionage Thriller 'Betrayal' and Expands International Partnerships
2025-06-30

ITV is set to captivate audiences with the launch of its new four-part espionage thriller, 'Betrayal', a co-production with Mammoth Screen that delves into the demanding world of contemporary intelligence work. This initiative is complemented by ITV Studios' strategic moves to expand its international footprint, notably through reinforced partnerships in Sri Lanka and the commissioning of fresh unscripted content by Disney+ for the UK market. The unfolding narrative of 'Betrayal', alongside the global spread of established formats and the introduction of innovative reality programming, signals a dynamic period for the broadcasting giant and its collaborators.

The production of 'Betrayal' is currently underway in key UK cities, Manchester and Liverpool, under the direction of Julian Jarrold, an acclaimed filmmaker known for his distinctive storytelling. The series is poised to explore the intricate psychological toll experienced by intelligence operatives in their high-stakes profession. At the heart of this narrative are John Hughes, portrayed by Shaun Evans, an MI5 agent grappling with the immense pressures of his duties, and his partner, Claire, a GP whose trust in him is tested by the clandestine nature of his work, embodied by Olivier Award winner Romola Garai. The cast is further enriched by the inclusion of talents like Zahra Ahmadi, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Gamba Cole, and Omid Djalili, alongside emerging television actors. The compelling script is penned by award-winning playwright David Eldridge, whose reputation for poignant adaptations precedes him, including an upcoming version of John le Carré's classic, 'The Spy Who Came in From the Cold'. The series, produced by Irma Inniss, centers on Hughes's investigation into a British-Iranian informant, which spirals into a perilous situation, drawing unwanted scrutiny from his superiors. Damien Timmer of Mammoth and Shaun Evans serve as executive producers, with the drama slated for a 2026 premiere on ITV1 and ITVX, and global distribution handled by ITV Studios.

Parallel to its drama slate, ITV Studios is fortifying its global presence through significant franchise agreements. A renewed partnership with Sri Lanka's Sirasa TV marks a pivotal step, securing two more seasons of 'The Voice Sri Lanka' and 'The Voice Teens', set to air later this year. Since its debut in 2019, 'The Voice' format has become a cultural touchstone in the region, consistently achieving high viewership. Adding to this expansion, 'Sirasa Catchpoint' is scheduled for a mid-July 2025 launch, making its debut in Asia. This game show, which blends trivia with physical challenges, captivated over three million viewers in its UK version on BBC One. Augustus Dulgaro, executive VP Asia Pacific at ITV Studios, lauded the extended collaboration, underscoring the adaptability and enduring appeal of their program formats.

Furthermore, Disney+ is augmenting its UK content library with three new unscripted series. A contemporary iteration of the iconic dating show 'Blind Date' is in the works, promising fresh twists on its classic hidden suitor premise, executive produced by Matthew Worthy, Kieran Doherty, and Graham Stuart. The streaming platform will also introduce 'The Rooneys', an observational series following the domestic and entrepreneurial endeavors of Coleen and Wayne Rooney, produced by Lorton Entertainment and Blast Films. Lastly, 'Jamie and Sophie: Raising Chelsea' will chronicle the journey into parenthood for 'Made in Chelsea' personalities Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo, a production by Dorothy St Pictures in association with Jampot Productions. Sean Doyle, Executive Director Unscripted for Disney+, highlighted the strategic focus on female-centric factual programming with these commissions.

These strategic moves across drama, unscripted content, and international partnerships underscore ITV's ongoing commitment to delivering diverse and compelling programming. From intense espionage tales to engaging reality series and popular game show formats, the network and its partners are actively shaping the future of television, promising a rich array of entertainment for audiences both domestically and worldwide.
