Kapta Space Secures $5 Million to Revolutionize Satellite Radar Technology
2025-02-21

A Seattle-based space technology startup, Kapta Space, has recently emerged from stealth mode with a significant financial boost. The company has secured $5 million in seed funding, led by MetaVC Partners, along with contributions from Entrada Ventures and Blue Collective. This investment will support the development of advanced satellite radar technology designed to enhance imaging capabilities and provide more frequent, high-resolution data. Kapta's innovative approach aims to revolutionize Earth observation and analytics by launching a network of low-cost satellites that can deliver faster and more detailed images compared to traditional systems.

Kapta Space was co-founded by Adam Bily and Milton Perque, both seasoned professionals in radar and satellite technology. The company’s electronically steerable radar system represents a significant advancement over conventional antennas, which rely on mechanical steering. By steering its beam electronically, Kapta's technology can capture images more rapidly and precisely, offering greater flexibility in resolution and coverage. This capability is particularly valuable for industries like mining, where frequent and accurate Earth observations are crucial.

One of the key advantages of Kapta's technology is its ability to switch between different imaging modes swiftly, allowing it to gather diverse data sets efficiently. This feature reduces the time and cost associated with capturing high-resolution images, making it an attractive solution for both commercial and defense applications. For instance, mining companies can benefit from more frequent updates on surface changes, while defense agencies can leverage the system for tracking ground targets. In 2024, Kapta received a high-level security clearance from the Department of Defense, signaling strong interest from government entities in collaborating with startups on advanced radar technology.

The founders bring extensive experience to the table. Perque has spent over two decades working on multi-function radar systems, most recently at Echodyne, where he met Bily. After stints at Apple and Astranis Space Technologies, Bily joined forces with Perque to establish Kapta. Their combined expertise positions the company to make significant strides in the competitive radar technology market. With this new funding, Kapta plans to expand its team and conduct orbital demonstrations of its technology, further solidifying its position as a leader in spaceborne radar innovation.

The influx of capital also underscores the growing importance of space as a strategic domain. As governments and commercial entities increasingly rely on satellite data for critical operations, low-cost, sophisticated sensors like those developed by Kapta are becoming indispensable. The company's vision aligns with the broader trend of startups entering the radar technology market, aiming to provide timely and precise Earth observation services. Kapta's advancements promise to transform how we monitor and interact with our planet from space, opening up new possibilities for industries and defense alike.
