2025-05-06

On a vibrant Sunday in Lake Placid, the community gathered for the first-ever May Day 10K and 5K9 race. Nick O’Brien, a senior at Lake Placid High School, emerged victorious with the fastest overall 5K time. The event featured both human participants and their furry companions, raising funds for the Tri-Lakes Humane Society. Organized by Greg Borzilleri, the race aimed to enrich the local outdoor sports scene while fostering community spirit.

The inaugural May Day 10K commenced on a picturesque evening in Lake Placid. With fifty enthusiastic participants, this unique race allowed pets to join in alongside their owners, creating an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie. A portion of the proceeds was donated to support renovations at the Tri-Lakes Humane Society, crucial as they prepare for upcoming animal welfare regulations. Victoria Tanner, TLHS Director, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage with the community during this pivotal moment for the organization.

Beyond its charitable purpose, the event highlighted the potential of the Adirondack Rail Trail as a hub for recreational activities. Greg Borzilleri, organizer and director of several other prominent races in the area, noted the trail’s burgeoning popularity despite ongoing construction. He emphasized the importance of starting small to ensure a smooth experience for all involved. Runners appreciated thoughtful details such as clear distance markers and pleasant weather conditions, which contributed to an enjoyable race day.

Several competitors took on double challenges, participating in another 10K earlier that day. Kevin Tuthill humorously remarked about his plans for rest after completing the grueling race. Results showcased impressive performances across various age groups, celebrating both seasoned athletes and promising newcomers. From young prodigies like William Henderson to experienced runners like Eric Holmes, the competition demonstrated the diverse talent within the Lake Placid community.

In addition to athletic achievements, the event strengthened bonds between residents and visitors alike. By integrating pet participation and charitable giving, it exemplified how sporting events can serve multiple purposes—promoting health, supporting worthy causes, and building connections. As the sun set over Lake Placid, participants and spectators alike left inspired by the shared energy and enthusiasm witnessed throughout the day.
