Maui's Food Relief Efforts Continue Through Innovative Partnership
2024-12-28

In the face of recent challenges, two Maui-based organizations have joined forces to ensure ongoing food assistance for local families and wildfire survivors. Despite the closure of a significant disaster recovery grant, Hungry Heroes Hawaii (HHH) and the Living Pono Project are collaborating to maintain crucial food programs. Together, they have already delivered hundreds of thousands of meals and pounds of fresh produce to those in need. The partnership will focus on delivering locally sourced produce and expanding support services to vulnerable populations.

Continuing the Mission: A New Collaborative Approach

As the Disaster Recovery National Dislocated Worker Grant comes to an end, Hungry Heroes Hawaii has had to place its staff on leave. However, this hasn't deterred the organization from continuing its vital work. By partnering with the Living Pono Project, HHH can maintain its commitment to serving Maui's community. This collaboration ensures that key food distribution points remain operational, providing essential resources to areas like Hua Momona, S-Turns, the Burn Zone, and Kahana Boat Ramp.

The transition marks a significant milestone for both organizations. Hungry Heroes Hawaii has served over half a million meals and delivered more than 200,000 pounds of produce with the help of numerous volunteers. Now, under the joint effort, the produce program will be managed by the Living Pono Project alongside Local Harvest. Fresh, locally sourced fruits and vegetables will continue to reach families in need through various hubs and even a free store operated by Living Pono. This seamless continuation reflects the resilience and adaptability of both organizations in the face of adversity.

Building Bridges for Sustainable Support

The Living Pono Project brings a unique perspective to this partnership, focusing on bridging gaps for vulnerable populations into sustainable industries. Grounded in Hawaiian culture and values, the project aims to connect individuals to the land, spirit, and community. With over 700 Maui families currently receiving food assistance, this collaboration promises to enhance the impact of both organizations.

Through initiatives centered on arts, culture, language, economic development, and environmental stewardship, the Living Pono Project aligns perfectly with Hungry Heroes Hawaii's mission. Both entities share a vision of fostering resilience, collaboration, and a deep respect for the environment. As they move forward together, they express gratitude for past achievements and look towards building a future where communities heal and thrive. The partnership symbolizes not just a handover but a harmonious blending of efforts aimed at creating lasting positive change in Maui.
