Metro to Alter Service & Close Stations Dec 20 - 30 for Construction
2024-12-16
From WMATA comes an important announcement. Between Friday, Dec. 20 and Monday, Dec. 30, significant changes will be made to Metro train service. Some downtown stations will be closed as part of this major construction project aimed at providing a smoother ride for customers. During this period, free shuttle buses will operate in place of trains between affected stations. These shuttles will utilize the existing bus lanes on H and I streets to ensure a quicker journey.

Closure Details and Dates

From Dec. 20 to 26, Farragut West, McPherson Square, and the lower level (Blue, Orange, Silver service) at Metro Center will be closed. Then, from Dec. 27 to 30, Farragut West, McPherson Square; the lower level (Blue, Orange, Silver service) at Metro Center, Federal Triangle, and Smithsonian; and the lower level of L’Enfant Plaza (Blue, Orange, Silver service) will also be closed. Finally, on Dec. 31, all stations will reopen.

Strategic Closure Planning

Metro has carefully selected these closure dates to minimize the impact on your travel. It is important to note that typically during this time of year, ridership is historically 40% lower. By having one longer closure, they are able to avoid multiple weekend shutdowns in the same area. This allows for more efficient construction work to be carried out without causing excessive disruptions to commuters.

Benefits of the Construction Project

The improvement of tracks and signaling through this construction project will have numerous benefits for Metro riders. With the enhanced infrastructure, customers can expect a smoother and more reliable train service. Reduced delays and improved connectivity will lead to a more pleasant commuting experience. Additionally, the use of free shuttle buses during the closures will help to ensure that passengers can still reach their destinations without major inconvenience.

Impact on Commuters

While the closures and service alterations may cause some initial disruptions, Metro is working hard to minimize the impact on commuters. They have provided clear information about the closures and shuttle bus routes to help passengers plan their journeys. It is advisable for commuters to check the Metro website or use mobile apps for real-time updates on service changes. By being prepared and flexible, commuters can navigate through this construction period with ease.
