The findings indicate that one in five households within the state are struggling with food insecurity. This marks the first time Second Harvest Heartland has undertaken such an extensive statewide analysis to gain a deeper understanding of the current challenges faced by residents. The research also highlights record-high visits to food shelves and growing concerns about future food availability.

The investigation into Minnesota's food insecurity issues was prompted by the need for more timely data than what federal statistics provide. Traditionally, organizations have relied on federal reports every 18 months, which can become outdated quickly. Recognizing this gap, Second Harvest Heartland decided to partner with Wilder Research to conduct its own comprehensive study. The results paint a troubling picture: 20% of households cannot afford sufficient food, while 30% express uncertainty about their ability to maintain adequate food supplies over the next year. These figures underscore the urgency of addressing this critical issue.

Sarah Moberg, Chief Operations Officer at Second Harvest Heartland, emphasized the significance of these findings. "One out of five Minnesotans cannot afford the food they need to thrive," she stated. The organization aims not only to distribute food but also to raise awareness about the underlying causes of hunger. Factors such as transportation, employment stability, childcare, and rising costs contribute significantly to food insecurity. Families often face tough decisions, prioritizing essential expenses over food purchases. The increasing prices of necessities like childcare, healthcare, housing, and energy further exacerbate the problem, making it difficult for many households to keep up.

Second Harvest Heartland is committed to tackling these root causes and has set an ambitious goal to reduce the number of food-insecure households by half by 2030. To achieve this, the organization focuses on creating awareness and advocating for systemic changes that address affordability and accessibility issues.
