2025-05-06

Located along West Main Street near Franklin Elementary School, Franklin Field stands as a testament to Marshalltown’s athletic heritage. Established in 1922, this historic venue has been the backdrop for countless victories and milestones over nearly a century. Born out of community effort, it became not only a place for sports but also a symbol of local pride. From its humble beginnings hosting high school football games to becoming a hub for middle school athletics and beyond, Franklin Field continues to evolve. In May 2025, plans for its reconstruction promise a brighter future, ensuring that this cherished landmark remains relevant for generations.

The Rich History of Franklin Field

In the heart of Marshalltown lies Franklin Field, where history meets opportunity. Constructed in 1922 through a collaborative effort involving students, families, and citizens, the field replaced rented fairgrounds used by Marshalltown High School (MHS) teams before then. On October 21, 1922, MHS celebrated their inaugural game at Franklin Field with an impressive win against Grinnell. Initially known as the Bulldogs, MHS athletes later adopted the Bobcat mascot in the late 1920s.

Franklin Field quickly gained recognition statewide. By 1925, just three years after its opening, the MHS football team achieved an undefeated season, earning them the title of "Mythical State Champions." Despite some setbacks due to eligibility issues, their legacy endured under legendary coaches like Leonard Cole during the 1940s, who led multiple undefeated seasons.

Beyond football, Franklin Field made headlines in 1922 when it hosted Iowa's first live radio broadcast of a high school football game. Over time, it expanded its role to include other sporting events, including serving as home turf for the Marshalltown Junior College football team from 1966 until the program's conclusion in 1978.

Since 1981, Franklin Field has primarily supported Miller Middle School athletics, fostering young talent and promoting values such as teamwork and discipline. Now, on May 6, 2025, the Marshalltown Community School District will break ground on renovations aimed at modernizing the facility while preserving its storied past.

From installing synthetic turf to enhancing lighting and amenities, these updates aim to create a versatile space accessible to all members of the community. This revitalization underscores Franklin Field's enduring importance as both a historical site and a vital resource for future athletes.

As we look toward the next chapter of Franklin Field, one thing remains clear—it is far more than just a playing field. It embodies the spirit of collaboration, resilience, and hope that defines Marshalltown itself.

Franklin Field's story reminds us of the power of community-driven initiatives. Its evolution reflects how shared goals can transform simple ideas into lasting legacies. As this iconic location undergoes transformation, it serves as a powerful reminder of the value placed on nurturing young talents and maintaining spaces that inspire growth and achievement. Whether you're a participant or spectator, there's something undeniably special about witnessing history unfold right before your eyes.
