A significant change in leadership has occurred at PS21, a renowned center for contemporary performance nestled in Chatham, New York. Recently announced, Vallejo Gantner has assumed the role of artistic and executive director. With an extensive background in arts administration, Gantner aims to continue the venue's mission of showcasing groundbreaking artists while expanding its reach beyond traditional urban centers. His appointment follows the tenure of Elena Siyanko, who played a pivotal role in establishing PS21 as an internationally acclaimed hub for innovative performances.
Vallejo Gantner brings with him a wealth of experience from his previous position at Performance Space New York (formerly PS122), where he served as director for over a decade. In this new capacity, Gantner envisions a future that not only highlights global talent but also fosters connections within the local community. Founded by Judy Grunberg in 2006, PS21 initially operated under a tent on its expansive property before transitioning to a cutting-edge proscenium stage in 2018. Under Siyanko's guidance, the center became synonymous with avant-garde music, experimental dance, circus arts, and cross-genre performances.
Gantner expressed enthusiasm about maintaining the tradition of discovering and presenting work by some of the most dynamic artists globally. He intends to introduce fresh programming concepts during the winter months when darkness and cold often deter visitors. This initiative seeks to address challenges faced by nearby businesses through tailored programs designed to resonate with regional audiences.
The upcoming season kicks off on May 30 with performances by the Hatched Ensemble, led by South African choreographer Mamela Nyamza. Although organized under Siyanko’s direction prior to her departure last year, Gantner is eager to implement his vision soon after taking office. By transforming potential drawbacks into opportunities, he plans to enhance both the artistic offerings and community engagement at PS21.
