These areas often see heavy traffic, especially those crossing major waterways like the Hudson River.

Addressing the dangers faced by transportation workers is another critical aspect of this proposal. Over the past few years, there have been numerous incidents involving harassment and assaults against these essential personnel. Two tragic fatalities since 2022 underscore the urgency of this issue. To combat this, Governor Hochul seeks to increase penalties for attacks on transportation workers, reinforcing the importance of their safety. Additionally, the Department of Transportation has released videos illustrating the devastating consequences of accidents in work zones, emphasizing the need for stricter enforcement.

The implementation of automated speed enforcement through radar technology and cameras in active construction zones has already shown promising results. Violators receive notifications via mail within two weeks of the offense, with fines escalating for repeat offenders. Out-of-state drivers are given slightly longer to respond. Importantly, responsibility for fines falls on the vehicle owner, regardless of who was driving at the time. Failure to pay can lead to complications with vehicle registration renewals. With over 169,000 notices issued and some drivers caught exceeding 100 mph, the program highlights the significant impact of these measures on public safety.
