A Night to Remember: Sarasota's Arts Gala Celebrates Red Mill Elegance
2025-03-23

In the charming climate of Florida, an unforgettable evening unfolded at the 2025 Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation Gala. Taking place on March 21 under mild spring conditions, nearly 300 attendees gathered in their finest attire for this prestigious annual gathering. The event featured a vibrant theme inspired by Moulin Rouge, with a cocktail reception, dinner, and a theatrical performance. Additionally, it honored educators from various counties through a generous legacy gift while raising funds for art education and the upcoming Sarasota Performing Arts Center.

An Evening of Glamour and Philanthropy

On a picturesque bay lawn adjacent to the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, guests were greeted by an opulent tent decorated with red blooms, elaborate centerpieces, glowing lamps, and flickering candles, all paying homage to the evening’s Moulin Rouge motif. Organized by co-chairs Susan and Jim Travers alongside Kara and Drayton Saunders, the gala commenced with a welcoming cocktail hour before transitioning into a sumptuous dinner. Following this, the audience was captivated by a live rendition of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” which brought the night’s theme to life in dazzling fashion.

This remarkable event also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of local educators. Thanks to a meaningful legacy donation from Louise Appleton, three outstanding individuals—Karim Manning, Ruslan Akhmadullin, and Brooks Tracey—were celebrated for their dedication to inspiring students through arts education across Sarasota, Manatee, Desoto, and Charlotte Counties. Kelli Maldonado, Executive Director of Mission and Impact at the Van Wezel Foundation, introduced these honorees during the ceremony.

All proceeds generated from the gala will be channeled toward enhancing art education initiatives and supporting the construction of the new Sarasota Performing Arts Center, ensuring that future generations can enjoy the transformative power of the arts.

From a journalistic perspective, this event serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of community engagement and philanthropy in fostering cultural growth. By celebrating both artistic expression and educational leadership, the gala exemplifies how collective efforts can create lasting impacts. Such occasions inspire us to recognize and support those who work tirelessly behind the scenes to enrich our lives through the arts.
