A leading pet food producer has announced a recall of one of its products following the detection of harmful bacteria. Blue Ridge Beef is withdrawing approximately 5,700 pounds of its Natural Mix pet food, sold in 2-pound logs, due to potential contamination with Salmonella. The affected batch carries lot number N25/12/31 and UPC code 854298001054. This precautionary measure is being carried out in coordination with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Salmonella poses significant health risks to both pets and their human companions. Animals that ingest contaminated food may suffer from symptoms like fatigue, digestive issues, fever, and vomiting. Some pets might only exhibit reduced appetite, elevated body temperature, and discomfort. Infected pets can act as carriers, potentially spreading the bacteria to other animals or humans. Pet owners are strongly advised to consult a veterinarian if their animals have consumed the recalled product and show any signs of illness.

Humans who handle contaminated pet food are also at risk, particularly if proper hygiene practices, such as thorough handwashing, are not followed. Symptoms in people can range from nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, to fever. In rare instances, Salmonella infections can lead to more serious conditions like arterial infections or arthritis. Individuals experiencing these symptoms after handling the product should seek medical care immediately.

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture conducted tests on January 8, 2025, and confirmed the presence of Salmonella in the product. Upon receiving this information from the FDA on January 27, 2025, Blue Ridge Beef promptly initiated the recall process. The recalled items were distributed between January 3 and January 24, 2025, primarily in retail outlets across several states including Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee, and Rhode Island.

To safeguard public and animal health, consumers are urged to return the recalled product to the point of purchase or dispose of it safely, ensuring it remains inaccessible to children, pets, and wildlife. Additionally, all pet food bowls, cups, and storage containers should be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized, and hands must be washed diligently after handling the recalled food.
