Phoenix Extends Financial Support for Small Businesses Impacted by Light Rail Expansion
2025-01-12

The local government of Phoenix, in collaboration with Valley Metro, has announced an extension of a financial assistance program aimed at supporting small businesses affected by the ongoing light rail construction. This initiative, known as the Small Business Financial Assistance Program (SBFAP), will now remain active until March 31, offering much-needed relief to eligible enterprises. Since its inception in 2021, this program has already provided over 270 grants, totaling more than $1.5 million, to businesses facing challenges due to construction activities.

To qualify for these grants, businesses must meet specific criteria. Applicants must be situated along the South Central Extension or Downtown Hub areas and have been operational prior to June 2019. Additionally, they should demonstrate a decline in revenue compared to pre-construction levels, with annual earnings below $750,000 and fewer than 15 employees. The grants can provide up to $9,000 per business, aiding them in navigating the economic disruptions caused by the infrastructure project. In 2024 alone, the program allocated over $400,000 to 65 businesses within the construction zone.

This extended support underscores the commitment of Phoenix's leadership to fostering a resilient and thriving local economy. By providing financial assistance during challenging times, the city aims to ensure that small businesses not only survive but also thrive in the long run. Such initiatives highlight the importance of community support and public-private partnerships in driving sustainable growth and development. Through these efforts, Phoenix is paving the way for a brighter future for its small business owners and residents alike.
