A recent study by GECA highlights a concerning trend in media consumption habits among Spain's over-the-top (OTT) platform users. A significant portion of these viewers, approximately 47.4%, regularly engage with unauthorized streaming services. This behavior spans across various types of content, with feature films being the most sought-after illegally, followed closely by episodic series and live sporting events.
Demographically, younger audiences lead this illicit activity, particularly those between the ages of 18 to 24 years old. However, it is not just the youth involved; there has been an observable rise in piracy rates among older demographics as well. Notably, individuals aged 25-34 have shown an increase of 5.2 percentage points in their engagement with pirated materials, while even those above 55 are turning towards such platforms at a rate that has climbed by 4.5 percentage points.
The growing reliance on unauthorized streams underscores the need for more accessible legal alternatives. By fostering innovation and ensuring fair compensation for creators, society can move toward a future where creative works are respected and valued appropriately. Embracing legitimate streaming solutions benefits everyone, from content producers to end-users who enjoy high-quality entertainment experiences.
