Record-Breaking Participation at the Montgomery Wheelchair Tennis Tournament
2025-04-14

This past weekend, Lagoon Park in Montgomery became a hub of athletic enthusiasm as 38 athletes gathered for the Open Wheelchair Tennis tournament. The event, organized by the nonprofit Dream Court and its dedicated team of volunteers, brought together players from various skill levels to compete in singles and doubles matches across four coed divisions, along with a special juniors category. Winners were awarded cash prizes, adding an extra layer of excitement to the competition.

Since its establishment five years ago, the tournament has experienced remarkable growth. Initially attracting fewer than 20 participants, it steadily climbed to 25, then 30, and finally reached this year's record-breaking number of competitors. Jessica Weyreuter, founder and director of Dream Court, expressed her delight in witnessing returning players who bring their families and inspire others through their participation. She also highlighted the crucial role the event plays in providing opportunities for wheelchair-bound athletes to engage in physical activity while fostering a sense of community.

Inspired by the success of the recent tournament, Dream Court is already planning its next initiative. On May 3, they will host a Unified Doubles Tournament, where athletes with disabilities will partner with traditional tennis players. This innovative approach aims to further integrate competitive sports and promote inclusivity. Through such events, Dream Court continues to champion the cause of accessibility in sports, encouraging individuals of all abilities to embrace physical activity and connect with one another in meaningful ways.
