Residents of Centre County grappling with food loss due to recent power outages are receiving assistance through shared resources. During a commissioners' meeting, Mark Higgins, one of the commissioners, outlined these available resources for affected individuals. The focus is on aiding Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients and others in need via local food banks. This support underscores the community's resilience and adaptability following a challenging period marked by widespread storm damage.

In response to the storm-related disruptions, SNAP beneficiaries have been granted an opportunity to apply for benefit replacements within ten days post-disaster, setting the deadline for May 9. They can either contact the County Assistance Office or submit an online affidavit. Additionally, the State College Food Bank has stepped forward to assist not only its registered clients but also those outside its usual network who require food replacement. Commissioner Amber Concepcion highlighted the varying impacts of food spoilage, from inconvenience to full-blown crisis for some residents.

The food bank’s emergency distribution process requires simple pre-registration details such as names and household sizes, with no other prerequisites except residency in Centre County. Distribution times are set Mondays from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM and Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM. Such measures aim to ensure timely access to essential supplies for all affected parties.

Commissioner Higgins also reflected on lessons learned from the extensive storm damage. He emphasized the importance of becoming more proactive following major storms, noting the delay in acquiring out-of-state repair crews to restore power. Future strategies will prioritize quicker deployment of assistance teams and examining potential infrastructure enhancements locally. Conversations with Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency are anticipated to address the handling of high call volumes, like the record-breaking day experienced by Centre County 911 during the storms, when approximately 35,000 customers faced prolonged power outages.
