A Turkish company, Metpack, has unveiled a groundbreaking product named Ezycompost. This coated paper and paperboard utilize BASF’s ecovio 70 PS14H6 biopolymer, designed specifically for food packaging. The biopolymer complies with EN 13432 and AS 5810 compostability standards, making it suitable for home composting under national regulations. It also meets US FDA requirements for food contact and provides excellent barrier properties against various substances, including grease, liquids, fats, and mineral oils. Furthermore, the material remains stable at high temperatures, even when exposed to boiling water.
Ezycompost represents a significant advancement in sustainable food packaging solutions. According to Sühan Gürer, vice-president of sales and new project development at Metpack, this product offers unparalleled advantages over traditional PLA-based coatings. Unlike PLA, which requires industrial composting facilities, Ezycompost can be composted at home, significantly reducing environmental impact. Moreover, its faster processing speeds enhance manufacturing efficiency without compromising on quality or performance.
The product is particularly appealing to paper packaging manufacturers and food brands aiming to achieve sustainability goals. Applications range from beverage cups (both cold and hot) to trays and pots suitable for freezing or microwave use. One of the standout features of Ezycompost is its compatibility with existing production lines. Its coating is approximately 40% thinner than PLA, allowing for higher production speeds. Additionally, the material performs similarly to polyethylene in terms of coating line speed, offering effective sealing and printing qualities without requiring additional adhesives.
BASF's ecovio material extends beyond food packaging, finding applications in cling films, organic waste bags, produce bags, and agricultural films. Last December, BASF collaborated with Endress+Hauser, TechnoCompound, and two German universities to further advance mechanical plastic recycling technologies. These efforts underscore BASF’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in the plastics industry.
Ezycompost marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of sustainable packaging. By enabling home composting and enhancing production efficiency, it empowers the food packaging industry to meet consumer demands for eco-friendly products while maintaining high performance standards. As companies increasingly prioritize sustainability, solutions like Ezycompost will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the future of packaging design and manufacturing.
