Revolutionizing Animal Food Ingredient Reviews: The SRIS Program
2025-04-21

A groundbreaking initiative has been introduced to enhance the evaluation process for animal food ingredients. In collaboration with Kansas State University's Olathe Innovation Campus, the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) unveiled the Scientific Review of Ingredient Submissions (SRIS) program. This new system aims to provide a more efficient and scientifically rigorous assessment method for ingredients used in pet food and livestock feed. Approved earlier this year, the SRIS program promises to significantly reduce review times while maintaining stringent safety standards.

The SRIS program represents a significant leap forward in the animal food industry's approach to ingredient innovation. It was officially endorsed by AAFCO members in early 2025 and is designed to halve the time traditionally required for ingredient evaluations. By offering transparent and standardized assessments, it caters to the needs of state regulators, industry participants, and researchers across the United States. Austin Therrell, AAFCO's executive director, highlighted the importance of this development, emphasizing its role in fostering scientific progress and operational efficiency without compromising on safety.

This innovative process involves submissions being overseen by AAFCO, which determines the necessary review level and package. A specialized panel from K-State Olathe, under the leadership of Dr. Haley Larson, conducts the scientific evaluations. Comprising experts from various universities and independent consultants, the panel ensures comprehensive expertise covering multiple species and technical aspects. Their recommendations are then forwarded to AAFCO for final approval, with accepted ingredients featured in AAFCO’s Official Publication, recognized globally by regulatory bodies.

Dr. Larson expressed enthusiasm about contributing to a process that prioritizes safety and quality in animal food ingredients. She noted the collaborative nature of the SRIS program, which aligns safety, science, and streamlined procedures to meet industry demands while upholding high standards for both animals and humans.

Replacing the previous Ingredient Definition Request process, SRIS complements the FDA's GRAS Notice program, providing an additional pathway for science-based ingredient approvals. Applications for the SRIS program are anticipated to open later this year, promising a new era of efficiency and innovation in animal food ingredient regulation.

The introduction of the SRIS program marks a transformative period for the animal food sector. By combining expedited reviews with unwavering commitment to safety, it sets a new benchmark for ingredient assessment. As stakeholders prepare for the upcoming application phase, the potential impact on the industry's growth and adaptability becomes increasingly evident, paving the way for enhanced product offerings and consumer confidence.
