For many, the pandemic was a period marked by uncertainty and stagnation. For Raquel de Carvalho, however, it became an opportunity to channel her creativity into something meaningful. From her north London studio, she reflects on those early days, explaining, "It was about focusing my energy and finding purpose amidst chaos." What began as a personal project quickly evolved into a celebrated label known for its distinctive aesthetic and commitment to ethical production.
This journey started long before the pandemic. Back in 2013, during her studies at Faculdade Santa Marcelina in São Paulo, de Carvalho unveiled a graduate collection that foreshadowed her current work. "Looking back now, it's fascinating," she muses. "The themes I explored then resonate strongly with what I do today." Yet, timing proved crucial. In an era where consumers demand transparency and responsibility from brands, de Carvalho’s vision aligns perfectly with modern expectations.
Before settling in London, de Carvalho honed her skills across continents. Her tenure at Calvin Klein’s Latin American design headquarters offered invaluable insights into the commercial aspects of fashion. "It was a steep learning curve," she recalls. "I gained a deeper understanding of how businesses operate within this industry." While this experience broadened her perspective, it also highlighted the limitations of purely profit-driven approaches.
Motivated by a desire to explore her creative potential further, de Carvalho moved to London in 2016 to pursue postgraduate studies at the prestigious London College of Fashion. Simultaneously, she collaborated with renowned designer Gareth Pugh, delving into the intricacies of knitwear. These experiences equipped her with both technical expertise and a renewed passion for pushing boundaries in fashion design.
During the pandemic, de Carvalho returned to Brazil and joined forces with Hecho Por Nosotros, an Argentinian NGO dedicated to promoting circular economies in fashion. This collaboration not only deepened her appreciation for artisanal craftsmanship but also reinforced her belief in the importance of education. "We focused on teaching people how to communicate ethical fashion effectively," she explains. "It emphasized the value of storytelling in connecting consumers with the origins of their clothing."
This involvement inspired her to incorporate similar principles into her own brand. By prioritizing transparency and fostering partnerships with small-scale producers, de Carvalho ensures that each piece carries a story worth sharing. Her approach resonates with a growing audience eager to support brands that align with their values.
A pivotal moment came when de Carvalho won the 2021 edition of Feel The Contest, organized by the Consorzio Promozione Filati, Italy's premier yarn producers' consortium. This victory provided her with the financial backing and validation needed to launch her eponymous label. "It gave me the confidence to pursue my vision wholeheartedly," she says. Armed with these resources, she set out to challenge conventional notions of knitwear.
Her designs embody a playful exploration of contrasts—dress versus undress, opacity versus transparency. "Lingerie serves as a key reference point," she reveals. "I enjoy experimenting with textures and patterns that reveal just enough while maintaining mystery." This philosophy manifests in creations like miniskirts adorned with intricate hand-crochet details and bandeau tops crafted from jersey and knit combinations.
De Carvalho’s work represents more than just fashion; it symbolizes a bridge between tradition and innovation. By integrating artisanal techniques with contemporary design elements, she crafts pieces that appeal to a diverse audience. "My goal is to create garments that feel timeless yet relevant," she asserts. "Each item should evoke emotion and provoke thought."
As the fashion landscape continues to evolve, de Carvalho remains committed to advancing ethical practices. Her contributions serve as a testament to the power of creativity combined with conscientiousness. Through her artistry, she invites us all to reconsider our relationship with clothing—and perhaps even ourselves.
