The Louisiana State University (LSU) community is in deep sorrow following the tragic passing of freshman track and field athlete Dillon Reidenauer. The 18-year-old pole vaulter was one of two individuals who lost their lives in a vehicle collision on Wednesday evening in Baton Rouge. The university issued a heartfelt statement, expressing profound grief over the untimely death of this talented young athlete. The LSU family extends its deepest sympathies to Reidenauer’s loved ones and all those affected by this heartbreaking event.
A tragic accident occurred around 9:07 p.m. local time when a Honda Civic attempted to make a left turn and was struck by a motorcycle. According to reports obtained by local news station WVLA, both drivers did not survive the incident. Bodhi Linton, a 23-year-old motorcyclist, also perished in the crash. Reidenauer had recently graduated from Fontainebleau High School in Mandeville, Louisiana, where she excelled as a pole vaulter. Her exceptional skills earned her second place at the 2024 Louisiana High School Athletic Association State Championships with an impressive clearance of 3.64 meters. She was set to join LSU as one of the top pole vaulters in the state.
Reidenauer's enthusiasm for her sport and her new chapter at LSU were evident in her social media posts. Just days after graduating high school, she expressed excitement about continuing her athletic journey with the LSU track and field team. Coach Dennis Shaver reflected on her loss, stating that Reidenauer was taken away far too early. He assured that the LSU Track & Field family would support each other through this difficult time and provide necessary resources to help everyone cope with the grief. In times like these, solidarity and compassion from fellow institutions, such as Texas A&M, offer much-needed comfort and strength.
In memory of Dillon Reidenauer, we are reminded of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. Her passion for sports and unwavering dedication serve as an inspiration to many. May her legacy continue to motivate future athletes to pursue their dreams with courage and determination. In remembering her, we honor her spirit and contributions to the LSU community.
