Staunton's Food Drive Success: Community Spirit in Action
2025-05-06

In a recent meeting on April 24, Stoney Caricofe made an impactful statement to the Staunton City Council by placing a gleaming glass trophy on the podium. This award symbolizes the triumph of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 513, headquartered in Staunton, for its exceptional efforts in last year’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Notably, Staunton emerged as the top collector among cities with similar populations nationwide. The food drive is scheduled for May 10 this year, and residents are encouraged to participate by placing non-perishable items near their mailboxes for collection by letter carriers and volunteers. Cindy Connors, the local coordinator, emphasized the community's vital role in achieving such success.

The journey of this achievement began under the passionate leadership of former president Tom Miller, who instilled a deep commitment to the cause. Now, as Caricofe steps into his shoes, he carries forward this legacy with enthusiasm, aiming to maintain the streak of consecutive victories. Last year alone, Staunton amassed an impressive 15,140 pounds of food for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, highlighting the strength of collective effort.

This year, Staunton has extended its partnership to include the Charlottesville branch of NALC, covering additional regions like Waynesboro and Harrisonburg. By collaborating across different categories, both branches aspire to achieve mutual success. As Connors aptly put it, "That’s our goal, to feed the Shenandoah Valley." Residents will soon find donation bags at their mailboxes in the week leading up to May 10, but any container will suffice for contributions.

Since its inception in 1993, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has evolved into the largest one-day food drive in the nation. Its significance cannot be overstated, especially during the summer months when demand for food supplies peaks. Michael McKee, CEO of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, expressed gratitude for the timely donations that help sustain pantry stocks. He praised the remarkable spirit of generosity and collaboration behind the event.

The upcoming food drive promises not only to replenish essential food resources but also to strengthen the bonds within the community. Through coordinated efforts and unwavering dedication, Staunton continues to set an inspiring example for others to follow, proving that together, they can make a tangible difference in feeding those in need.
