TDOT Halts Highway Construction During Holiday Travel Period
2024-12-17
During the Christmas and New Year's holidays, TDOT has taken a significant step to ensure the smooth passage of travelers. With an estimated 2.7 million Tennesseans set to travel between December 21 and January 1, and 2.58 million of them choosing to drive, TDOT has halted all lane closure activity on interstates and state highways. This decision aims to prevent traffic delays and get everyone to their destinations safely.

Top Priority: Safety

Deputy Governor & TDOT Commissioner Butch Eley emphasizes that safety is the top priority. "With such a large number of people expected on Tennessee roadways during the holidays, we want to keep traffic moving and ensure everyone's well-being," he says. Drivers are reminded to wear their seatbelts, reduce their speed, avoid distractions, and move over for emergency vehicles. These simple yet crucial actions can make a significant difference in road safety.

Holiday Construction Closure

Except for a few long-term closures necessary for safety, all construction-related closures will be suspended from 11:59 p.m. on Monday, December 23, 2024, through 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, January 1, 2025. While workers may still be on-site in some construction zones, drivers should obey all posted speed limits, especially in these areas. Slower speeds are essential due to the temporary layout of the roadway, and violations will be strictly enforced. Drivers convicted of speeding through work zones where workers are present face a fine of $250 to $500, along with court fees and potentially increased insurance premiums.

Access to Traffic Information

Travelers can stay informed about the latest construction activity and access live streaming SmartWay traffic cameras from their desktop or mobile device at www.TNSmartWay.com/Traffic. They can also dial 511 for statewide travel information. It is crucial for drivers to use these motorist information tools wisely and "Know Before You Go" by checking travel conditions before leaving for their destination. Avoiding distractions such as tweeting, texting, or talking on a cell phone while driving is also essential for safety.During the holiday period, TDOT's decision to halt highway construction has the potential to make a significant impact on the travel experiences of millions of Tennesseans. By prioritizing safety and providing easy access to traffic information, TDOT is working hard to ensure that everyone can enjoy a safe and stress-free journey.
