On a damp Saturday morning, amidst gray skies and light rain, a heartfelt ceremony took place at Falconer Central School. Family members, school administrators, faculty, and the Golden Falcons' varsity baseball team gathered at the newly named Denny Meszaros Field to unveil a commemorative sign honoring the late coach. This event celebrated not only Meszaros' contributions to baseball but also his lasting impact on countless lives as both an educator and mentor.
Despite unfavorable weather conditions, attendees were undeterred in their tribute to Denny Meszaros, who passed away in 2022. The initiative to replace the deteriorating original sign was spearheaded by a collaborative effort, with current coach Fred Carder unveiling the new design crafted by Scott Reagle and produced by AKS Sign Designs and Marketing. Reflecting on Meszaros' legacy, Carder expressed his aspiration to emulate the former coach's dedication and passion. During his illustrious career, Meszaros achieved 509 victories, secured 10 Section VI titles, and claimed a state championship, earning him induction into the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
School superintendent Steve Penhollow highlighted Meszaros' dual role as both a passionate coach and an influential teacher. Beyond the game, Meszaros imparted life lessons, emphasizing perseverance, hard work, and resilience. A testament to these values occurred during the spring of 2000 when the team rallied from a sluggish start to secure a remarkable season-ending victory, culminating in a state championship triumph.
In addition to the ceremony, special guests Leslie and Rachel Berg joined the gathering to honor their father and grandfather. As the day unfolded, nature provided its own poignant tribute—a rainbow appeared above the field shortly after the unveiling, symbolizing a fitting celestial farewell.
The emotional resonance of this event extends beyond the physical marker now adorning the field. It encapsulates the enduring spirit of Denny Meszaros, whose influence continues to inspire generations of athletes and students alike. The presence of loved ones, coupled with the symbolic appearance of the rainbow, underscored the profound respect and admiration held for this legendary figure in Falconer’s history.
