Uncontested Elections for SGA Spring 2025 Leadership
2025-04-13

This spring, the Student Government Association (SGA) is set to welcome its new leaders as voting commences on April 16 at noon. Naomi LeDell '26 and Kieran Lucus '26 are running unopposed for the roles of chair and vice chair, respectively. Both candidates bring significant experience from their current positions within the Undergraduate Finance Board (UFB). A candidate forum will be hosted in collaboration with the Brown Political Union, marking a return to a more comprehensive election process after last year's shortened cycle. The voting period concludes on April 21 at noon.

Naomi LeDell has demonstrated her commitment to enhancing student life through financial support and advocacy. As the incumbent chair of UFB, she successfully secured a $203,000 boost in the Student Activities budget for the upcoming academic year, despite an anticipated federal funding freeze of $510 million at Brown University. Her platform emphasizes maintaining this increased budget allocation while advocating for better utilization of underused spaces such as the Lindemann Performing Arts Center. Furthermore, LeDell aims to refine funding processes for clubs by continuing initiatives like expanding financial support for essential event costs and restructuring annual funding preparations to include office hours and workshops.

In addition to her achievements, LeDell highlights her understanding of UFB operations and her ability to navigate complex issues without encountering learning curves. Last year, her campaign focused on reviving large-scale events without fees, promoting period product accessibility, and increasing funding for mental health-related activities.

Kieran Lucus brings his own vision to the role of vice chair. Currently serving as a representative at large for UFB, he expresses enthusiasm about assuming greater leadership responsibilities. Lucus envisions adopting a campus-engaged approach to funding decisions, proposing public forums or policy workshops that foster dialogue between student leaders and UFB members. To improve efficiency, he plans to introduce stricter attendance policies within UFB, ensuring clarity and transparency in funding decisions for student groups. This year, Lucus contributed significantly by raising baseline funding for clubs to $300, emphasizing the importance of cohesive teamwork in decision-making processes.

The upcoming elections reflect a promising continuation of efforts aimed at enhancing student experiences and financial support systems. With both candidates presenting clear visions for their roles, the SGA anticipates a productive term ahead, dedicated to fostering growth and engagement across the university community.
