The collaboration between Delta and Yorktown has raised over $130,000, channeling these funds toward local cancer organizations and families grappling with the disease. This year alone, the event shattered records, raising between $23,000 and $24,000.
This extraordinary growth reflects the community's unwavering commitment to supporting one another during challenging times. Tim Cleland, Delta's tennis coach, expressed amazement at how far the event had come. He noted that few opportunities exist in high school sports where such diverse groups unite under a common cause. Addison DeWitt, a JV player from Yorktown, found solace and purpose in SmashCancer following the loss of her grandfather to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Despite being sidelined due to injury, she participated in the ceremonial first serve alongside her grandmother, a two-time cancer survivor. For DeWitt, the event deepened her appreciation for early detection and its potential to save lives. She witnessed firsthand the financial burdens placed on families navigating cancer treatment and understood the critical role fundraising plays in alleviating these pressures.
Her story resonates with countless others who have faced similar challenges. The beneficiaries of this year’s proceeds include the Cancer Center at IU Health Ball, Little Red Door Cancer Services of East Central Indiana, and five local families enduring ongoing cancer battles. These contributions ensure vital resources reach those in need, offering relief and encouragement when it matters most.
