Upcoming Change in Gemini's Source Display Mechanism
2025-04-03

A potential redesign in how Google's Gemini presents its sources and related content is on the horizon. Instead of showcasing a horizontally scrollable list beneath responses, users may soon encounter a dedicated "Sources" button. This new feature will lead users to a separate page that lists all referenced materials and associated content. The update reflects an effort to streamline information presentation while maintaining accessibility for users seeking deeper context.

In the current version of Gemini, when users query the chatbot, they receive not only detailed answers but also access to the sources used in crafting those responses. These sources are displayed as a horizontal list directly below the answer. However, recent findings from an APK teardown of the latest Google app release (version 16.12.39.sa.arm64) suggest this format is set to evolve. Developers have introduced a rounded "Sources" button that appears after each response. By clicking this button, users will be directed to a distinct page where all relevant sources and supplementary material are organized.

This adjustment draws parallels with the approach adopted by ChatGPT. Both platforms aim to enhance user navigation through their respective source citation methods. Nevertheless, notable distinctions exist between the two systems. While ChatGPT employs an overlay system to display links to source websites, Gemini opts for redirection to a standalone page. Additionally, ChatGPT incorporates website favicons into its Sources button, offering users a quick visual cue regarding the referenced sites without needing to open the overlay. Conversely, Gemini utilizes a straightforward button adorned with a link icon.

Although ChatGPT’s method appears more refined at first glance, it is important to recognize that Gemini’s "Sources" button remains under development. As such, further enhancements are anticipated before its official release. These improvements could potentially bridge the gap in user experience and bring Gemini closer to rivaling or even surpassing existing standards in source presentation technology.

The upcoming modification to Gemini's source display represents a significant step forward in optimizing user interaction. By introducing a "Sources" button that leads to a dedicated page, Google aims to improve clarity and usability. This change not only aligns with modern design trends but also underscores the platform's commitment to providing comprehensive and accessible information. As the feature continues to develop, users can look forward to a more polished and efficient way of accessing the foundational data behind Gemini's responses.
