Upcoming Community Forum to Address Potential Budget Cuts on Local Food Services
2025-05-07

Amidst the anticipated Federal and State budget reductions, concern is growing over their potential effects on various sectors such as health, research, recreation, education, arts, and human services. A particular focus will be placed on organizations that play a crucial role in feeding community members and families in need. This significant topic will be explored at this month's Community Forum scheduled for Friday, May 9.

The forum will feature guest speakers Phil Alonso, Executive Director of the Interfaith Food Ministry, and Julie Thornbury, Executive Director of The Food Bank of Nevada County. Taking place from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., this free event will occur in the auditorium, room N-12, on the Sierra College Nevada County campus. Moderated by local journalist Lorraine Jewett, attendees will gain insights into how rising food costs and possible budget cuts could affect families reliant on these vital service agencies.

For decades, both the Interfaith Food Ministry and The Food Bank of Nevada County have steadfastly supported families facing food insecurity within Western Nevada County. These organizations exemplify the power of community partnerships, working closely with local farms and grocery stores to provide essential support. The Community Forum series, sponsored by the Sierra College Foundation’s Nevada County campus, offers an engaging platform where local issues are discussed through informative speaker events held several times annually. As the series takes its summer hiatus, it leaves behind a legacy of fostering public dialogue and understanding.

Through collaboration and open discussions, communities can find innovative solutions to pressing challenges like food security. By bringing together diverse perspectives, the upcoming forum aims to inspire collective action towards ensuring no family goes hungry. Such initiatives underscore the importance of resilience, cooperation, and proactive planning in maintaining strong, supportive communities.
