A significant development in the specialty coffee sector has taken place as FairWave, a prominent player in the industry, incorporates Black & White Coffee Roasters into its growing portfolio. Founded by Kyle Ramage and Lem Butler in 2017, Black & White becomes FairWave's 11th brand acquisition, marking an important milestone for both entities. This strategic move not only enhances FairWave’s presence but also introduces its first North Carolina-based brand under its umbrella.
Based in Raleigh, North Carolina, Black & White Coffee Roasters is renowned for its commitment to excellence in the specialty coffee domain. Since its inception, it has made strides under the leadership of co-founders Kyle Ramage and Lem Butler, former champions of the US Barista scene. With this acquisition, FairWave continues its five-year streak of expanding its high-end coffee brands. The financial specifics of the transaction remain undisclosed, yet FairWave assures that Ramage will continue leading Black & White while Butler departs but remains dedicated to ethical practices within the industry.
FairWave launched in 2020 through the amalgamation of several notable brands, including The Roasterie and Messenger Coffee from Kansas City. Since then, it has progressively integrated various esteemed names such as Ceremony Coffee Roasters from Maryland, Anodyne Coffee Roasting from Milwaukee, Up Coffee Roasters, and Spyhouse Coffee Roasters from Minneapolis. Each addition contributes unique strengths to FairWave's comprehensive network.
The collective aims to provide businesses with scalable resources and shared economies without compromising on the distinct qualities each brand brings to its local market. Currently, FairWave boasts seven roasters or roaster/retailers alongside four bakery, tea, or coffee shop brands. Black & White operates two cafes in the Triangle area besides engaging in wholesale and direct-to-consumer sales.
Isaac Hodges, President of Growth at FairWave, expressed excitement over welcoming Black & White into the fold. He emphasized their shared vision and the mutual benefits expected from this collaboration. As they embark on this new journey together, both companies aim to push boundaries in the specialty coffee world while learning from one another.
This acquisition represents more than just business growth; it symbolizes a shared passion for innovation and quality in the coffee industry. Both organizations are poised to leverage their combined strengths to elevate the specialty coffee experience further.
