2025-02-11

In the aftermath of recent wildfires in Los Angeles County, a special disaster relief program has been initiated to support those affected by providing temporary financial aid for food purchases. The initiative aims to ensure that individuals and families who have suffered losses due to the disaster can meet their nutritional needs until February 19th. This assistance is available to both residents and workers in specific areas impacted by the fires.

Details of Disaster CalFresh Program in Los Angeles County

During this challenging period, the county has introduced a temporary relief measure known as Disaster CalFresh. This program offers financial assistance to purchase groceries through an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, which can be used at authorized retail stores. Beneficiaries must either reside or work in the fire-affected regions or have experienced food loss due to power outages. Notably, this program extends eligibility to groups typically not covered under standard guidelines, such as college students, non-citizens, and sanctioned individuals.

The application process involves contacting the designated hotline or visiting any Los Angeles County DPSS office, which will remain open seven days a week to facilitate applicants. Individuals must have faced hardships like food spoilage, income loss, or significant delays in receiving payments to qualify. Eligibility is restricted to those living or working in Eaton, Hughes, Hurst, and the Palisades.

For current CalFresh recipients affected by the wildfires or power outages, replacement benefits are available upon submission of a CF 303 form before March 6th. Additionally, all active CalFresh beneficiaries in the county and neighboring areas will automatically receive the maximum benefit allotment for their household size. Until March 10th, they can also use their benefits to buy prepared hot foods from authorized retailers.

From a journalist's perspective, this initiative underscores the importance of community resilience and government responsiveness during crises. It highlights how timely and targeted interventions can significantly alleviate the immediate challenges faced by disaster victims, ensuring they have access to essential resources. Such programs serve as a reminder of the critical role public services play in supporting vulnerable populations during emergencies.
