This month, Nintendo offered Ars Technica and other media outlets an exclusive hands-on experience with Mario Kart World, set to launch on June 5. Following this, a brief livestream provided additional insights into the mechanics of this free-roaming Nintendo Switch 2 title. Unlike its predecessors, Mario Kart World introduces players to an expansive interconnected universe where they can freely explore between race tracks. This innovative approach includes numerous P-switches that activate mini-missions to sharpen driving skills, alongside hidden collectibles and interactive elements.

At the heart of Mario Kart World lies the concept of an open world that bridges the gap between races. Players will encounter countless P-switches scattered throughout the game, each initiating a short challenge designed to enhance their driving prowess. Beyond these, explorers can uncover secret medallions and question-mark panels, as well as consumable items offering outfit unlocks. The courses themselves are inspired by the regions they represent and include reimagined classics from previous titles. In Grand Prix mode, travel between courses becomes an integral part of the competition; for instance, after completing the Mushroom Cup's first track, players must navigate to the next one within the same cup.

The Knockout Tour represents another key feature, gradually reducing a field of 24 racers to four through strategically placed checkpoints. These extended competitions traverse multiple tracks seamlessly connected in a predetermined route. For those who prefer conventional racing formats, VS Mode allows participants to compete in traditional three-lap races on individual tracks. Additionally, returning fans will enjoy familiar battle modes such as Balloon Battle, focusing on weapon-based combat, and Coin Runners, emphasizing monetary accumulation.
