MTV Video Music Awards Set to Premiere on CBS in 2024
2025-04-03

A major shift in broadcasting is set to take place as the MTV Video Music Awards will debut on CBS for the first time in 2024. This decision marks a departure from its traditional airing on MTV and other Paramount Media Networks. The event, scheduled for September 7th at UBS Arena, will feature a live broadcast across all time zones from 8-11 p.m. ET/5-8 p.m. PT. Additionally, fans can catch the show live through Paramount+.

In alignment with recent trends in network programming, this move mirrors decisions such as the CMT Music Awards going live on CBS instead of CMT. A one-hour pre-show will also air live across various Paramount Media Networks. However, CBS emphasized that only MTV among the Paramount networks will simulcast the event alongside them. Last year's VMAs reached a multi-network audience across 13 channels, including Comedy Central, CMT, VH1, BET, and Univision, but this year's focus narrows down to CBS and MTV.

The upcoming 2024 VMAs are anticipated to build on the success of last year’s awards, which saw an impressive increase in viewership with approximately 4.08 million viewers tuning in. This figure represents an 8% rise compared to the previous year. While details about nominations, hosts, or performers have yet to be disclosed, the return to UBS Arena is confirmed. Executive production for the 2025 show will be handled by Bruce Gillmer and Jesse Ignjatovic, with Barb Bialkowski co-executive producing. Other key figures include Alicia Portugal and Jackie Barba overseeing production, Wendy Plaut managing celebrity talent, and Lisa Lauricella focusing on music talent.

This strategic move not only broadens the reach of the VMAs but also signifies a significant evolution in how major entertainment events are broadcasted. By aligning with CBS, the awards aim to tap into a broader audience base, enhancing engagement and visibility. Such transitions highlight the industry's ongoing adaptation to changing viewer preferences and technological advancements, ensuring that iconic events like the VMAs continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
