A significant milestone has been achieved by the Franklin County Community Meals Program with the acquisition of a new property in Orange. This development not only marks an expansion in space but also paves the way for enhanced community services. The transition to the former Mike’s Place at 81 East River Street is set to occur in mid-May, offering a much-needed upgrade from their current location on East Main Street.
With the increase in participation numbers, the need for a larger facility became evident. According to Valerie Hudson, the executive director, the new site offers opportunities beyond just increased storage capacity. Spanning over 1,236 square feet, compared to the previous 850-square-foot space, it will allow for extended operating hours and additional programs. The inclusion of a commercial kitchen opens doors to hosting community meals and exploring urban agriculture initiatives, fostering a sense of community engagement.
The excitement surrounding this move is palpable among board members like Sarah Adam, who highlights the accessibility benefits of the new location. Plans include a produce-only pantry service on Mondays, as well as provisions for toddler necessities such as baby food and clothing. Furthermore, innovative ideas like lottery-based fuel assistance are being considered to further support the local population. In 2024 alone, the Orange Food Pantry distributed over 880,000 pounds of food, demonstrating its crucial role in the community.
This initiative exemplifies how strategic planning and resourcefulness can lead to meaningful change. By expanding facilities and services, the Franklin County Community Meals Program sets a benchmark for other organizations aiming to address food insecurity. Their commitment to nurturing both physical and social well-being within the community serves as an inspiration, proving that collective efforts can create lasting positive impacts.
