Phoenix Area Faces Major Interstate Closures for Weekend Infrastructure Improvements
2025-01-24

This weekend, significant portions of Interstate 10 in Phoenix will be closed to traffic as part of the ongoing Broadway Curve Improvement Project. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced that westbound lanes of I-10 will be shut down between Loop 202 and I-17, along with sections of State Route 143 near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Motorists are advised to anticipate delays or seek alternative routes during this period. Additional closures and lane restrictions are also scheduled on other major highways, including Loop 101 Pima and various on-ramps. ADOT has provided several detour options to help drivers navigate around the construction zones.

The Broadway Curve Improvement Project aims to enhance traffic flow and safety in one of Phoenix's busiest transportation corridors. From Friday evening to early Monday morning, travelers should be prepared for extensive closures affecting key arteries. Specifically, westbound I-10 will be inaccessible from Loop 202 Santan near Chandler Boulevard to the I-17 interchange. Southbound SR 143 will also close between Loop 202 Red Mountain and I-10. These closures are necessary to facilitate critical infrastructure upgrades that will benefit the region in the long term.

To accommodate the work, several ramps and intersections will be affected. For instance, westbound I-10 on-ramps at Wild Horse Pass Boulevard and Chandler Boulevard will be closed, as well as ramps connecting US 60 to westbound I-10. Additionally, eastbound Loop 101 Pima will be reduced to three lanes overnight for maintenance. Drivers heading toward Sky Harbor Airport or downtown Phoenix may need to use alternate routes such as northbound Loop 101 Price or westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain.

For those traveling to west Phoenix, ADOT suggests using Loop 202 South Mountain to reach I-10 near 59th Avenue. Travelers coming from Casa Grande or Tucson might consider taking I-8 as an alternative route. In case the construction is completed ahead of schedule, westbound I-10 may operate with two lanes open near the US 60 interchange from Sunday evening to early Monday morning. Maps detailing the closures and recommended detours are available online to assist drivers in planning their journeys.

In light of these changes, motorists are encouraged to stay informed about the latest updates and adjust their travel plans accordingly. By following the suggested detours and being mindful of potential delays, drivers can minimize disruptions and ensure a smoother trip through the Phoenix area during this crucial phase of infrastructure development.
