Other Half Brewing Company, which started as a small Brooklyn brewery in 2014, has now expanded into a network of seven breweries across the United States. This growth has been fueled by the popularity of its core lineup, particularly the fan-favorite IPA named Broccoli. Brewmaster Sam Richardson highlights that Broccoli has been a cornerstone of their portfolio for nearly a decade, showcasing the brand's commitment to innovation and quality.
The naming of this beer is rooted in cultural references, symbolizing green elements and a hint at cannabis culture. The flavor profile of Broccoli aims for a citrusy yet tropical character, with notes of pineapple from the Simcoe hops. Over time, the recipe has evolved, becoming more intentional with hop selection. Strata, known for its cannabis-like aroma, has replaced Cascade, while Nelson Sauvin has become a key ingredient, adding complexity to the brew. The use of Cryo versions of Mosaic and Simcoe adds an extra layer of brightness and clarity to the beer’s overall character.
Other Half places great emphasis on hop selection, taking multiple trips to Yakima to handpick the best varieties. For Broccoli, the brewing process includes a rare 10-minute hop addition, along with whirlpool additions during dilution. Unlike many brewers who add dry hops during active fermentation, Other Half opts to do so post-fermentation, ensuring the hop characteristics remain clear and vibrant. The beer also benefits from a balanced malt bill, featuring two-row barley, white wheat, flaked oats, and oat malt, all contributing to a soft mouthfeel and a well-rounded flavor profile.
Broccoli's success reflects the changing landscape of craft beer. As the hype around hazy IPAs has mellowed, Other Half's beers have become more accessible, fostering a loyal customer base. While the excitement of long release lines may have diminished, the enthusiasm for New England-style IPAs remains strong, especially in the Northeast. Richardson acknowledges the ongoing challenge of educating consumers but emphasizes the importance of building trust in both specific beers and the brand as a whole. Through consistent quality and innovative brewing practices, Other Half continues to thrive, proving that great beer can stand the test of time.
