Tragic Crash on Interstate 91 Claims One Life, Leaves Child Critically Injured
2025-03-09

A tragic accident occurred on Interstate 91 in Rockingham, Vermont, resulting in the death of one individual and critically injuring a child. The incident unfolded on Saturday morning when a passenger vehicle collided with a fuel tanker truck. Two other occupants of the vehicle were transported to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The child, who sustained critical injuries, was airlifted to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for emergency treatment. The collision led to significant traffic disruptions, including prolonged closures of both northbound and southbound lanes.

The crash took place under hazardous weather conditions. Intense snow squalls had swept through the area, leaving roads slick and treacherous. Around 9:45 a.m., a Hyundai IONIQ 5 rear-ended a stationary Peterbilt fuel tanker truck, causing severe damage to the front end of the smaller vehicle. The driver of the Hyundai was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities believe that icy road conditions contributed significantly to the driver's inability to stop in time.

In addition to the primary crash, several other vehicles were involved in separate incidents nearby, though these were not directly related to the initial collision. Emergency services, including local fire departments and ambulances, responded swiftly to manage the situation. Multiple agencies collaborated to clear the scene and restore traffic flow, which was temporarily halted for several hours.

The aftermath of this devastating event has left a community in mourning and raised concerns about road safety during adverse weather conditions. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, emphasizing the need for heightened caution when driving in winter weather. Authorities continue to withhold the names of those involved until all necessary notifications have been made.
