Tri-Union Seafoods Recalls Canned Tuna Products Due to Botulism Risk
2025-02-14

A major seafood company, Tri-Union Seafoods, has initiated a recall of several canned tuna products due to potential contamination with the deadly botulism toxin. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced that these items, distributed under various brand names including Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s, are being withdrawn from grocery stores nationwide. The recall is primarily due to a manufacturing defect in the "easy open" pull tab lids, which could compromise the seal and lead to contamination. No illnesses have been reported as of now, but consumers are advised to return or dispose of the affected products immediately.

The issue stems from a design flaw in the pull tab lids used on certain canned tuna products. This defect may allow the seal to break over time, leading to potential leakage or contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium responsible for botulism, a severe form of food poisoning. The FDA has emphasized that even if the cans appear undamaged or the contents seem normal, consumers should not consume these products. The affected brands and retailers include Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s, sold across multiple states such as Maryland, Texas, California, and others. The recall covers specific UPC codes and can codes, ensuring that only the potentially compromised batches are targeted.

Botulism is an extremely serious illness caused by a toxin that attacks the nervous system, leading to symptoms like difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and in extreme cases, death. While uncommon, store-bought foods can also be sources of this toxin if improperly sealed or preserved. The FDA warns consumers who experience any unusual symptoms after consuming these products to seek immediate medical attention. Additionally, infants showing signs of weakness, poor feeding, or facial drooping should be taken to a healthcare provider without delay.

To address consumer concerns, Tri-Union Seafoods is offering full refunds or replacement coupons for returned products. Customers can contact the company via email or phone during business hours for further assistance. The recall does not affect other products from Tri-Union Seafoods, and the company remains committed to ensuring the safety and quality of its offerings.
