A recent investigation reveals that one of the most prevalent issues flagged during MoT inspections involves lighting and electrical components, accounting for a significant portion of advisory notices. This finding stems from exclusive data provided by Auto Express’s MoT checker service, raising alarms as nearly one-sixth of drivers disregard these advisories according to a separate survey. Problems with vehicle lighting and electronics can stem from various factors such as battery deterioration or obscured headlights, which could pose potential risks on the road.

While suspension system concerns represent another common advisory area, they are considered critically dangerous only a fraction of the time. However, tyre-related advisories, though less frequent, are judged hazardous almost sixty percent of the time. In the UK, maintaining a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm is crucial for ensuring effective road grip and braking performance. Moreover, although braking system defects contribute to fewer advisories overall, they rank second in terms of being classified as perilous, occurring nearly three out of ten times.

On a positive note, advancements in automotive technology have virtually eliminated speedometer malfunctions and seatbelt installation issues over the past four years. Despite this progress, driver behavior remains a critical factor in vehicle safety. The Auto Express study among more than five hundred participants shows that while half address MoT advisories promptly, others opt for professional consultation before taking action. Encouraging responsible car maintenance practices not only enhances personal safety but also contributes to safer roads for everyone.
