The Duo, a newly opened café and bar in Flushing, Queens, New York City, has become an architectural marvel with its innovative design elements. Spanning over 1,070 square feet, this establishment features a striking glass sculpture that changes appearance throughout the day, creating a unique atmosphere for both daytime coffee enthusiasts and nighttime bar patrons. The design team at Design Next Agency crafted a space that seamlessly transitions from a cozy café to a vibrant bar, emphasizing lighting and material choices to enhance the experience.
The Duo's most eye-catching feature is a dramatic floating glass sculpture that serves as the centerpiece of the venue. This installation, designed by Tenzin Samphel and his team, not only adds visual appeal but also functions as a dynamic light source. The glass dragon, weighing over 80 pounds per segment, is suspended using reinforced steel wire. It reflects light differently depending on the time of day, setting the tone for the café's dual identity. The tubular LED lights within the sculpture adjust in color and intensity, blending subtly during the day and becoming a vibrant focal point at night.
The design process faced initial challenges when plans for an upper level were declined by the landlord. Instead of adding more seating space, the designers chose to focus on creating a captivating visual element that would define the space. The glass dragon installation was meticulously aligned using a gridded floor guide, ensuring precision in every detail. The interplay of light and shadow created by this sculpture enhances the overall ambiance, making it a standout feature of The Duo. The use of color-changing LEDs allows the sculpture to adapt to different times of the day, providing a seamless transition from a calm, inviting café to an energetic bar environment.
The interior of The Duo blends contemporary materials with warm, inviting textures. Stainless steel, brown leather, gray boucle, and light oak wood create a modern yet welcoming atmosphere. Mirrored panels are strategically placed to enhance the sense of space, reflecting light and adding depth to the venue. Matte black accents provide contrast, emphasizing the adaptable nature of the space. The dual bar design facilitates quick conversions between café and bar operations, ensuring smooth transitions throughout the day.
Lighting plays a crucial role in defining the character of The Duo. Adjustable settings allow for a shift from warm, welcoming tones during the day to vibrant, energetic hues at night. This flexibility enables the venue to cater to diverse customer preferences and occasions. The combination of materials and lighting creates a harmonious balance between functionality and aesthetics. The result is a versatile space that can effortlessly transform from a serene café in the morning to a lively bar in the evening, offering patrons a unique and memorable experience. The thoughtful design ensures that every visit to The Duo feels fresh and exciting, no matter the time of day.
