Empowering Students: Johnston Community College Partners with Food Bank for Enhanced Support
2025-02-14

Johnston Community College (JCC) has embarked on a transformative journey by forming an official partnership with the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. This collaboration aims to bolster JCC's efforts in supporting students who face food insecurity. The initiative ensures that essential food resources are readily available, fostering an environment where students can thrive without worrying about basic needs.

The first shipment of food arrived this week at JCC’s Elevation Market, symbolizing a crucial milestone in addressing hunger issues on campus. A team comprising faculty, staff, and student volunteers from JCC’s TRIO program collaborated to unload, sort, and stock these vital supplies. This collective effort highlights the institution's dedication to enhancing student well-being and academic success. Dr. Felita Carr, director of student support services and coordinator of the Elevation Market, emphasized that this partnership goes beyond just providing food; it is about cultivating a culture of care and ensuring students do not have to choose between education and basic necessities.

JCC President Dr. Vern L. Lindquist underscored the importance of the federal TRIO program in supporting student success across community colleges. By extending this mission through the new partnership, JCC ensures students receive comprehensive support both inside and outside the classroom. To ensure smooth operations, JCC has completed the Food Bank’s New Agency Orientation, equipping staff and volunteers with the necessary skills to manage food distribution effectively. This initiative exemplifies how collaborative efforts can build a stronger, more supportive educational community, promoting student success and overall well-being.
