Reports indicate that Amazon is preparing to launch a TV streaming device powered by its in-house developed Vega OS in 2025. The company aims to shift away from Android-based systems for its television technology, marking a significant move toward greater autonomy and control over its ecosystem. To facilitate this transition, Amazon has been actively persuading major publishers to adapt their applications for the new platform.
Despite the widespread adoption of Android as the operating system for numerous brands' TV hardware, Amazon seeks to carve out its own path with a proprietary operating system. This entails phasing out Fire OS, which is essentially a modified version of Android, and embracing Vega OS, internally referred to as Vega. According to sources familiar with the matter, cited by Janko Roettgers of Lowpass, Amazon plans to roll out a TV streaming device running on Vega later this year. The company has also been diligently working on enticing major publishers to port their apps to the nascent platform. Initially, there were intentions to introduce a Vega-powered streaming stick in 2024; however, these plans encountered delays.
Vega OS reportedly draws its foundation from Linux rather than Android. In 2023, it was disclosed that Amazon was urging app developers to utilize React Native, enabling apps to function seamlessly on both Vega and legacy hardware still operating on Android. It is speculated that Amazon envisions eventually replacing Fire OS with this innovative software.
Although Amazon has not yet formally introduced Vega OS, users have already experienced it through devices such as the Echo Show 5, Echo Hub smart displays, and the Echo Spot. These products offer a glimpse into the potential capabilities and features of the upcoming OS, sparking anticipation for its full debut.
The introduction of Vega OS signifies Amazon's strategic move towards enhancing its technological independence. By developing a unique operating system tailored to its needs, Amazon aims to create a more cohesive and controlled user experience across its range of devices. As the company continues to refine and expand Vega's capabilities, the forthcoming release of its TV streaming device promises to be a pivotal moment in the evolution of home entertainment technology.
