Amherst Finance Director Set to Rejoin UMass Team
2025-04-07

A significant shift in leadership is on the horizon for Amherst as Melissa Zawadzki, the town's finance director, plans her departure this spring. Following less than a year in the role, Zawadzki will transition back to the University of Massachusetts, where she previously held a senior position within the Auxiliary Enterprises. Her new role at UMass will focus on Information Technology Finance and Facilities, bringing with it a fresh set of responsibilities. Zawadzki expressed gratitude for her time in Amherst, emphasizing the rewarding nature of her experience collaborating with committed colleagues and community members.

The upcoming change in leadership comes amidst an important period for Amherst, coinciding with the annual budget season. Town Manager Paul Bockelman assured that Zawadzki will remain actively involved in financial matters until her official departure on July 1. Her contributions during this crucial phase are expected to ensure a smooth transition. Prior to Zawadzki's appointment, Sean Mangano had served in the role before moving to Holyoke public schools. In response to previous transitions, Bockelman engaged Sandy Pooler as a consultant, highlighting the importance placed on maintaining stability in financial planning.

Melissa Zawadzki’s extensive background in public finance across various municipalities, coupled with her active involvement in Williamsburg’s financial committees, has positioned her well for her next challenge at UMass. As she departs, she acknowledges the supportive community in Amherst and looks forward to new opportunities ahead. This leadership change underscores the importance of adaptability and continuity in municipal management. The transition reflects a broader commitment to fostering skilled professionals who contribute positively to both local governments and educational institutions, reinforcing the value of experienced leadership in public service.
