Apple Settles Siri Privacy Case, Offering Payments to Affected Users

In a recent development, Apple has agreed to compensate individuals who purchased an Apple product within the last decade. The compensation arises from allegations that Siri may have inadvertently listened to private conversations without user consent. Those eligible for this settlement will receive communications via email or postcard, although independent claims are also accepted. This initiative stems from a class-action lawsuit settled earlier this year concerning potential misuse of personal data through Apple's digital assistant.

Back in January, Apple reached a resolution regarding a significant legal dispute involving its virtual assistant, Siri. As part of this agreement, individuals who bought specific Apple devices during the designated timeframe can now file for reimbursement. Eligible devices include iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, MacBooks, iMacs, HomePods, iPod Touches, and Apple TVs, purchased between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024. Claimants must believe that Siri activated during private discussions without their permission.

The settlement addresses concerns raised by users alleging that sensitive information was captured through Siri without their knowledge or approval. To facilitate the process, those identified as potential claimants will either be emailed or sent postcards containing details on how to proceed with their claims, along with unique codes. For those who do not receive such notifications, the settlement website remains available for manual submissions.

You have until July 2, 2025, to submit your claim. Despite the substantial $95 million fund allocated for this purpose, individual payouts are expected to be modest due to the extensive pool of eligible participants. Given the widespread use of Apple products over the specified period, most claimants are anticipated to receive around $20 per device.

While the total settlement amount is considerable, it underscores Apple's commitment to addressing privacy concerns seriously. By offering financial reparation, the tech giant aims to restore trust among its user base while reinforcing its dedication to safeguarding personal data. Although the compensation per person might seem limited, the gesture symbolizes a significant step towards acknowledging and rectifying potential privacy infringements.
