James Baker, whose life was an embodiment of rock and roll, left an indelible mark on the Australian music scene. Known for his dynamic drumming style and charismatic presence, Baker became a pivotal figure in shaping the sound and ethos of several iconic garage-rock bands. His journey began in the 1970s when he ventured to New York and London, immersing himself in the burgeoning punk movement. Inspired by what he witnessed, Baker returned to Perth, bringing with him not only the raw energy of punk but also a unique aesthetic that influenced countless musicians. He quickly became central to the local punk scene, co-founding influential groups such as the Victims and the Scientists, both of which produced records that remain celebrated today.

Baker's career spanned decades, during which he continued to collaborate with some of Australia’s most renowned artists. After the dissolution of the Victims, he joined forces with Kim Salmon in the Scientists, producing groundbreaking work before moving eastward to Sydney. There, alongside former bandmates like Dave Faulkner, he helped ignite the post-Radio Birdman garage-rock revival centered around legendary venues like the Strawberry Hills Hotel. It was during this period that he became a founding member of the Hoodoo Gurus, contributing significantly to their acclaimed debut album "Stoneage Romeos."
